Convention 2008, Celebrating the Music of America
Celebrating the Music of America was an unforgettable experience. Beginning with an old fashioned American icon, the town hall meeting, which was moderated by Dr. Scott McBride Smith, we heard from composer Seymour Bernstein, Dr. Rob Cutietta, Dean of USC’s Thornton School of Music, Miguel Angel Corzo, President and C.E.O. of The Colburn School, pianist Kevin Fitz-Gerald, Gary Ingle, MTNA Executive Director, and composer Robert Vandall, We were dazzled by students in piano masterclasses directed by Seymour Bernstein, Kevin Fitz-Gerald, Robert Vandall and Oxana Yablonskaya. Students performed in masterclasses given by Jim Walker on flute, Gary Gray on clarinet, violinist Frank Almond, Jeffry Kaatz on cello, vocalist Gary Glaze and Lucinda Carver on harpsichord.
More than 700 students participated in recitals and programs throughout the five days in Riverside. Teachers from all over the state of California heard Carl Matthes speak on Copland, Peter Yazbeck on Glenn Gould, Nadia Boulanger’s teaching as depicted by Don Campbell, “The Soul of Pedaling” by Seymour Bernstein, the music of Gottschalk by Michael Schneider, a review of new materials by Gail Lew, contemporary music by Susan Svrcek, Erik Forrester on performance anxieties, and lectures by Rebecca Bogart, Carolyn Biller, Ed Darling, Linda Rohmund, and Carolyn Carson. Our own teachers were featured in performances in Adult Seminar and the Contemporary Music Seminar. A new film scoring competition was held for the first time this year! This program will be expanded next year. World renowned composer Paul Chihara was commissioned by the Friends of Today’s Music. His piece, Fantasy- Trio for flute, cello and piano was met with much aplomb.
Your board is hard at work composing the 2009 convention which will be held at the Santa Clara Marriott Hotel July 3 – 7.
